Sandy Skoglund was born in 1946 in Quincy, Massachusetts. She received her BA degree in studio art in 1968 from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. During 1966-67, she lived in Aix-en-Provence and Paris, France and studied art history at the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre. In 1971, she received a MA degree in painting from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa and in 1972 received a MFA degree in painting from the same university. Ms. Skoglund has been a Professor of Art since 1973, teaching first at the University of Hartford, Hartford Art School, Hartford, Connecticut from 1973 to 1976. She has been teaching at Rutgers University, New Jersey since 1976 and is currently teaching the subjects of photography and the art of installation/multi-media.
She has exhibited her art work nationally and internationally in selected solo exhibition and group exhibitions. National solo exhibitions include The Green House installation traveling within the United States (Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania). International solo exhibits include Radioactive Cats, an installation and retrospective of photographs that traveled in Europe (France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland) during 1991-1992 and a solo exhibit at Gallerie Watari, Tokyo, Japan in 1984. Ms. Skoglund's art work has been published in such national exhibition catalogues as Whitney Biennale (New York, NY, 1981), Photography and Art, 1946-1986 (Los Angeles, California), Cross References: Sculpture into Photography (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1987), and the Photography of Invention: American Pictures of the Eighties (National Museum of American Art, 1989). International exhibition catalogues include Constructed Realities (Germany, 1989), Biennale de Marseille (France, 1990), and Arret Sur Viaduc (France, 1992). She has lived in New York City since 1976.
