As an important American artist during the unfolding of the Feminist Movement, Judy Dater created an historically important body of work concerning societal gender roles as well as exploring her own identity through her photography asserting, “pictures of other people are always sort of a self-portrait.”  Her works often question social roles and challenge identity fixations placed on women while her ability to capture raw emotions and psychological presence has won her international acclaim.
